Description:

Tanner Environmental Services (TES) is hiring multiple field biologists for full-time seasonal positions surveying for northern and California spotted owls and American goshawks in southern Oregon and California. Applicants must have the ability to work primarily independently, be comfortable hiking and driving at night, take detailed field notes and fill out paperwork promptly and thoroughly. Experience surveying for spotted owls and/or American goshawks is preferred but not required (training will be provided). Work for spotted owls will begin from mid-March to late April depending on project area access. American goshawk surveys will begin in June. Both seasons will run to about the end of August.

Shared housing will be provided but extended periods of camping may be required. Personal AWD/4WD vehicle not necessary but may influence hiring decision depending on the availability of company vehicles. Personal vehicle mileage reimbursed at government standard rate ($.725/mi for 2026).

Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently and drive high clearance roads at night in remote areas
  • Ability to read topographic maps, use a compass, and navigate using GPS and/or mapping apps such as Avenza
  • Ability to follow standardized survey protocols
  • Physical fitness enabling off trail hiking in steep and rugged terrain
  • Minimum of one season of wildlife survey experience; spotted owl preferred
  • Driver’s license required
  • Use of a personal AWD/4WD vehicle is preferred
