The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust was founded in 1985 to conserve the remarkable diversity of the natural heritage of Brunswick, Topsham and Bowdoin. With the conservation of over 3,400 acres of natural areas, the Land Trust is actively pursuing its mission while maintaining 25 miles of trails, managing a seasonal Farmers’ Market and Community Garden, and collaborating with numerous partners in the area to further conservation and community. This position is year-round and requires both field work and office-based work that will support the Land Trust’s stewardship work and help to maintain and monitor the protected lands and trails of the Brunswick, Topsham, and Bowdoin region. This position requires outreach and volunteer management to accomplish numerous stewardship tasks including trail work, in addition to independent field work monitoring properties and meeting Land Trust Accreditation requirements. While this position will require fieldwork and office-based tasks, some remote work is possible as workflow allows. This position will report to the Director of Conservation and work with the Stewardship Committee.
Responsibilities Include, but are not limited to:
● Complete annual property monitoring of BTLT’s properties in accordance with Land Trust Accreditation requirements, including report writing and recordkeeping
● Create and update management plans/baseline documents, including associated field work and GPS/GIS mapping, for fee properties and existing easement properties
● Read surveys and navigate boundaries to flag and install permanent markers on fee and easement properties
● Conduct general property and trail maintenance, including use of power tools, weedwhackers, and creating permanent and temporary signage
● Supervise and work cooperatively with seasonal stewardship interns and engage with members of the public to answer questions and represent BTLT
● Proactively manage and engage volunteers to complete trail work and other stewardship tasks
● Collaborate with partner organizations and contractors to accomplish projects and priorities within annual work plan
● Conduct strategic invasive species management on conserved lands, including invasive plant mapping and removal, biological control species releases, and volunteer engagement
● Performing hand tool and small motor equipment maintenance as needed
● Complete other stewardship tasks as needed and assigned by the Director of Conservation
Qualifications:
● A positive and flexible attitude and passion for land conservation
● Ability to work collaboratively, responsibly and safely both independently and with others
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to multitask and move multiple projects forward simultaneously
● Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
● Driver’s license and reliable personal transportation
● Previous experience in a stewardship and/or trail building position
● Experience working with and/or managing volunteers
● Experience using hand tools and power tools in the field, preferably including experience using a chainsaw
● Ability to lift and carry heavy materials and equipment over rough ground and willingness to work in sometimes adverse conditions including heat, rain, biting insects, and difficult terrain
● Computer experience, including Microsoft Word and Excel, ArcGIS products (ArcMap and/or ArcPro), GPS units, and making maps Multiple years of experience or training in more than one of the following areas a
plus:
● Experience planning and building new trails, including permitting stream crossings, working with contractors, and sourcing materials and tools
● Comfortable completing basic carpentry tasks
● Knowledge of native flora and fauna, in addition to common invasive species of Maine and management techniques
