The Stream Ecology lab at the Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to four research technicians to support research projects evaluating how private land conservation programs impact wadeable stream communities in Illinois.

Field work responsibilities include collecting stream fishes by backpack electrofishing or electric seining, collecting benthic macroinvertebrate samples, and measuring water quality and stream habitat parameters. Laboratory responsibilities include gear maintenance, data entry, sorting benthic macroinvertebrate samples, and other tasks as needed. Successful applicant(s) will work in scenic and agricultural streams, learn how to identify >30 species of fish, become familiar with aquatic insect orders, and assist with ongoing research projects. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in stream ecology research.

The position will be based out of Champaign, Illinois, but daily travel of 2-3 hours to field sites throughout the state is expected. Workdays may consist of long hours outdoors in challenging environments. The successful applicant(s) would work approximately 40 hours per week with a variable schedule based on project needs. Occasional overnight travel may be required (per-diem and lodging provided).

Qualifications

Must have or be working towards a bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, fisheries, or natural resources. Must be knowledgeable or willing to learn stream ecology techniques. Candidate must demonstrate good judgment, strong interpersonal skills, close attention to detail, and critical thinking skills. Requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 40 or more pounds of gear) and the ability to work long hours (12+ hrs.) in challenging environmental conditions. A valid driver’s license and the ability to swim are required. Experience identifying Midwestern fish, driving four-wheel drive vehicles, and hauling trailers is preferred.  Preference will be given to candidates with a desire to learn about freshwater systems. 

Salary: $16.00 - $18.00 per hour, depending on experience

Available: June 1 – October 30, 2026, with the possibility of extension depending on funding and programmatic need.  The start date can be adjusted depending on the candidate’s availability.
