We are conducting research into the effects of fuel treatments and wildfire on ecosystems across North America. An essential component of this research is review of relevant science literature and analysis of data on fire occurrence, land management activities (e.g., fuel treatments), and related factors (e.g., climate) that contribute to fire trends and patterns. We are seeking a research assistant to collect, manage, and analyze relevant data in support of this research. Specifcially, the candidate will be required to apply a variety of research techniques to analyze wildfire related data, including summarizing scientific literature using systematic review techniques and/or helping to build statistical models of fire activity in relation to key drivers (climate, land use, fuel conditions, vegetation types, etc.). Student contractor will also be expected to help write reports and peer-reviewed science publications, and they may also be required to perform occasional geospatial analysis of wildfire activity using ArcGIS.

This is a 1 year position. dependent on funding and performance (with possible option of a second year). Desired start date is March 2, 2026. Applicant is expected to work 30-40 hours/week.

To be eligible, candidate must be enrolled in a MA or MS (or PhD) program in Environmental Science, Geography, Ecology, Biology or related field, OR within one year of completing such a degree. The recipient must have the ability to review and summarize methods/results presented in scientific literature, manage large datasets, and perform a variety of statistical analyses using the R programming language. Experience with wildfire related science/management topics, monitoring of vegetation/fuels, and/or GIS (e.g., ArcGIS) is strongly preferred. This is a student contractor position, so in addition, you must be:

  • at least 18 years old, and
  • eligible to work in the United States (U.S. Citizen or appropriate work visa), and
  • currently enrolled in a degree program at a recognized educational institution, or
  • a recent graduate (within one year of graduation).

The recipient will be work as a member of Dr. Doug Shinneman’s research team and under supervision of USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center staff located in Boise, Idaho (this position may be in office, hybrid, or remote, but preference will be given to local applicants).
