Overview
Bird Alliance of Oregon ’s Camp Aftercare Educators are passionate nature enthusiasts and relationship builders excited to help us run our aftercare program! Together with the aftercare team, you’ll lead joyful, curious and collaborative aftercare programming for children from all socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. You will develop and lead daily activities that center around nature exploration, music and art. Your day will start at 9:30 where you will help the summer camp team by joining a camp as a support educator for the day. Before the camp day ends you will join together with the aftercare team to prepare for the day. Aftercare will run from 3:15-5:15 M-Th and 1:15-5:15 on Friday.

You’re someone with some experience in outdoor education or teaching in an informal setting (e.g. camps, parks, museums, community centers or comparable spaces), especially in socioeconomically and racially diverse environments. You love nature and are excited about giving kids opportunities to connect with the natural world. It’s essential that all educators have a strong comfort working in multiracial teams, a dedication to creating an antiracist learning environment, and a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through their practice. Candidates with lived experience working with youth of color, immigrants, and people from working class families are highly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Work in consistent teams of 2 educators to lead 10 weeks of aftercare.
  • Create and lead culturally responsive after care activities that build an inclusive and welcoming environment for all children
  • Provide extra support during our camp day by joining one of our camps and support as needed
  • Be responsive to various emotional and physical needs of the campers with age-appropriate behavior management interventions
  • Facilitate circle times and creative expression throughout the camp week
  • Help facilitate all camp community circles and closing circles through songs, dance and books.

Skills

  • 1+ years of experience leading programs with children of diverse ages and backgrounds
  • 1+ years of experience in programs in informal or outdoor settings such as parks, playgrounds or forests
  • 1 + years of experience facilitating positive behavior management with youth
  • Demonstrated cultural competency and enthusiasm for working with diverse populations, including communities of color, immigrants, and underserved communities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with music, art or other forms of creative expression desirable
  • Second language abilities in addition to English (Spanish, Mandarin/Cantonese, Vietnamese, Somali, Russian) desirable
