The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is seeking an adaptable, communicative, and patient behavior support specialist to work with our staff, campers, and families in our summer camp programs from June through August! ALNC is a non-profit educational organization guided by Aldo Leopold's land ethic, with a mission to nurture children, their well-being, and environmental sustainability through connecting and learning in nature. ALNC serves children, teachers, and families through year-round programming that includes field trips, camps, a nature preschool, and public and private events.

TIME COMMITMENT: JUNE 8 - AUGUST 21, 2026

This full-time seasonal position includes one week of staff training (June 8-12) and ten weeks of summer camp (June 15-August 21). Camps run from 8:30am-3:30pm on weekdays followed by after care until 5:30pm. The expected work schedule is 8:00am-4:00pm. This position has the option to start with part-time/flexible hours in April or May to assist with inclusion support meetings and summer camp planning as available.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary responsibility of this position is to assess, develop, and implement camper inclusion support plans and assist staff in modifying programs to help campers be successful in an outdoor nature setting. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support summer camp staff in managing a wide range of camper needs.
  • Work with and support campers socially, emotionally, and behaviorally, both individually and in group settings.
  • Work with families, program staff, and administrators to promote universal strategies that create inclusive experiences. 
  • Help empower individuals to access nature, build coping skills, and enhance social/emotional development in natural environments.
  • Facilitate communications and conversations with camper families and staff related to behavior and inclusion support needs. 

Ideal candidates will be able to manage a full-time weekly schedule, work well in a team environment, communicate effectively with others, and represent ALNC in a professional manner. Flexibility, initiative, the ability to problem solve, and a sense of humor are a must.

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to one (1) year in Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, PBIS, Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, ABA Therapy, or relevant field. 
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR (training will be provided for those who need it).
  • Must pass a child care background check and fingerprint screen.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and patience.
  • Ability to develop rapport with campers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Comfortable making quick decisions in response to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to work outside in all summer weather conditions.
  • Ability to apply behavioral strategies within outdoor, nature-based programming (hikes, games and other outdoor activities).

COMPENSATION

The starting pay for this position is $25 per hour. Employees receive one paid holiday (July 3) and the ability to request up to five days of unpaid time off during the summer.
