As a core member of our front-line educational team, Teacher Naturalists are responsible for delivering immersive, high-quality environmental education across our 54-acre site and the adjacent Yellowstone River Corridor. This year-round role involves working with a diverse audience—ranging from toddlers to adults—with a primary focus on upper elementary students. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic educators who thrive in outdoor settings, are comfortable teaching in various weather conditions, and are passionate about fostering deep connections between people and the natural world.

Responsibilities: 

  • Lead engaging environmental education programs as part of our 4th-grade program, field trips, in-class programs, and community programs. 
  • Adapt program implementation as needed, based on weather, engagement, or other factors. 
  • Provide a safe and positive learning environment for all program participants, including awareness of physical abilities, environmental hazards, and group dynamics. 
  • Provide high-quality programming, including regular evaluation of successes and failures in the programming planning, approach, equipment, or other aspects, and enhancement as necessary. 
  • Confidence in communicating and engaging with teachers, parents, and the general public about the program implementation, outcomes, and concerns. 
  • Assist with educational equipment maintenance and organization. 

Qualifications: 

  • Experience teaching in formal or non-formal settings is preferred. 
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively as a team. 
  • Ability to stand, walk, and engage participants in outdoor programming in a variety of weather conditions for an extended period of time. 
  • Comfortable working with youth ages 2-13. 
  • Preferred experience in Inquiry Learning, Reggio, Nature-based or Natural Interpretive programming, or similar education pedagogies.   
  • Interest and/or specific knowledge of natural history subjects, particularly in the local area. 
  • Responsible, dependable, self-motivated, and enthusiastic. 
  • Ability to occasionally work evening and weekend hours. 

Position Details

  • Schedule:  Avg 20-25 hours per week, with occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Housing: Please note that housing is not provided.
