ABOUT THE ROLE
Verdama Earth, a small and ambitious team leveraging nature for climate solutions, seeks a Technical Lead to drive our carbon offset project development. This role is for a passionate professional with a strong track record in environmental markets and carbon offset projects, seeking a purposeful career in a highly collaborative environment.
You'll need strong technical skills, confident communication, and proven project management experience. The job will be based in Central America (ideally Honduras). You are a proficient Spanish speaker with English fluency (Portuguese/French a plus), and have led project development in environmental markets.
As our Technical Lead for Nature-based Climate Solutions (NCS) and Ecosystem Services Markets (ESM), you'll lead Verdama Earth's carbon and nature strategy, advancing decarbonization through NCS and strategic use of carbon and ecosystem services markets. You'll develop and implement innovative nature-based solutions (conservation, sequestration, biodiversity, restoration, AFOLU, blue carbon), navigate complex policies, and negotiate with partners and communities. A key focus will be developing partnerships to scale NCS and carbon market models, starting with a large Central American project. You'll also build our internal carbon market intelligence resource and contribute to the "Verdama Earth Academy."
Frequent domestic and international travel may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Expertise:
- 10+ years of experience in NCS and carbon project development.
- Exceptional written, spoken, communication skills in both Spanish and English.
- In-depth knowledge and proven application of carbon science, voluntary carbon standards, and methodologies, as well as climate policies.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and managing complex or multiple projects from inception to completion, including staffing, workloads, and finances.
- Supervisory experience, including hiring, motivating, guiding, and managing performance of technical and community-based teams.
- Proven track record in partnership development with non-profit, community, and government agencies.
- Experience in a development context, particularly within Latin America, is highly valued.
Technical Skills:
- Strong understanding of GHG quantification, carbon market mechanisms, and innovative project development.
- Proficiency in data analysis and visualization related to carbon emissions, sequestration, and ecosystem health using tools like GIS, Python, R, or SQL.
- Comprehensive understanding of Nature-Based Solutions (e.g., REDD+, ) and ecosystem restoration techniques.
- Knowledge of current trends and practices in climate policy, nature, carbon markets, and other ESMs, particularly within the Latin American context.
Soft Skills & Additional Qualifications:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in cross-functional team environments.
- Multilingual and cross-cultural experience, with Portuguese and/or French as a strong advantage.
- Ability to translate scientific concepts and technical innovations into practical applications for conservation.
This role will be offered as a 1 year consultancy agreement with the possibility to prolong.
