This position serves as CPW’s operational professional for statewide activities related to terrestrial game species data collection, management, analysis, and summarization. Responsibilities as an operational professional include consulting and working with the Senior Terrestrial Data Analyst to create/maintain/modify software to compile, combine, store, analyze, and report population, harvest, and hunting participation databases for terrestrial wildlife species; designing analytical tools necessary to analyze and evaluate wildlife management and research programs; managing contracts and overseeing vendor performance of data delivery for major programs, developing procedures to integrate and manage data in agency systems; monitoring functionality of data systems and correcting associated problems; and maintaining backup procedures to ensure recovery of information in the event of a system failure. This position consults with terrestrial research and management program leaders to determine data needs and also coordinates with other Branches to fulfill data needs. This position provides data summaries of results and statistical analyses, including graphical representation of data, to the Parks and Wildlife Commission, Division staff, agencies, organizations, and publics.
Specific job duties include but are not limited to:
Administration of Data and Data Systems
Maintains, monitors, analyzes, summarizes, and reports existing datasets to support wildlife and hunting data needs of staff and the public. Annual high volume periods for data system needs are year-round, common work products include programs, summaries, and reports of hunting data at various scales for various purposes.
Harvest and Participation Surveys
Supports the collection of hunter harvest and participation data and collaborates with the Senior Terrestrial Data Analyst and vendors to maintain efficient data collection and data quality. Supports analysis of hunter harvest and participation data and summarizes and reports datasets annually.
Ad Hoc Harvest Systems
Develops, maintains, monitors, and modifies systems and databases for creating hunt codes and collecting ad hoc harvest data - specifically related to special hunts and Ranching for Wildlife (RFW) - and collaborates with field staff to ensure accurate and timely submission of harvest and hunter participation data.
Implementation of Hunting Management and Policy
Consults with the Senior Terrestrial Data Analyst on designing, managing, and coordinating the implementation of hunting management systems and policies such as hunt codes, quotas, harvest limits, season structure, and hunting licensing. Annual high volume periods for implementation of hunting management and policy are November through January and March through May.
Analysis and Reporting
Assists the Senior Terrestrial Data Analyst on wildlife management policy development and related data requests to evaluate data availability, potential modifications to databases and reports, and process adjustments to support data requests and policy changes. Provides guidance on modifications to data collection processes, and analyzes reports and disseminates summary alternative metric data to Division staff, Parks and Wildlife Commission the public.
