Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that is committed to marine and terrestrial biodiversity conservation in the eastern Mediterranean. Archipelagos focuses on multidisciplinary scientific research and efficient conservation work. The organization operates beyond city centers and commercial interests and carries out conservation work alongside local communities, national and EU policy makers, and media. The Archipelagos’ Terrestrial Conservation Team carries out surveys throughout the year with a focus on the island of Samos, monitoring the status and the habitat of key species.

Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site role where the primary role will be coordinating research projects, leading surveys, training, and guiding interns. As well as to assist the research team in conducting field research, surveys, and laboratory work in the areas of environmental conservation and ecological restoration.

Task Includes

  • Organising fieldwork with the different data collection platforms (e.g. camera traps, sediment collection).
  • Supervising BSc / MSc thesis projects (With help of Project Manager).
  • Organizing spatial databases.
  • Supporting the other teams in processing spatial data.
  • Teaching local communities and/or universities about terrestrial conservation.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, or a related field
  • Experience conducting fieldwork related to environmental or ecological studies
  • Familiarity with techniques such as setting up camera traps and/or audio moths is a plus
  • Strong data management and analysis skills, experience working with statistical software (Preferable R)
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing techniques is a plus
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Commitment to environmental conservation and preservation of biodiversity
  • Ability to work in a team in dynamic field settings, often in adverse weather conditions
  • Experience managing and training students and/or volunteers
