GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Help serve visitors from all over the world by maintaining park trails, leading work crews and educating the public on natural and cultural resource protection in a beautiful desert mountain setting.

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, this position performs highly complex (senior-level) construction, restoration, renovation, and maintenance work at trail routes within Hueco Tanks State Park and Historic Site.  Provides daily oversight, hands-on construction and logistical support for trail work performed by park staff and alternative workforces including volunteers and Texas Department of Criminal Justice work crews among others. Directs and trains crews or other alternative work force, ensuring safety and natural/cultural resource protection guidelines are followed.  Responsible for daily and long-term project plans, including progress reports and estimates of material and equipment needs.  Maintains equipment and tools, and submits required reports.  Coordinates work with work crews, park and regional staff.  Assists in natural and cultural resource monitoring and erosion control projects. Assists as needed with park operations tasks including maintenance of facility, equipment and grounds, customer service and community outreach.  Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division and branch rules, regulations and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.

Experience:

Four years facility, equipment or grounds maintenance experience.

NOTE:  Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Licensure:       

Must possess a valid State driver’s license.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses.                                                                                                                                       

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

  • Three years experience in trail construction and maintenance including drainage/erosion and trail infrastructure.
  • Two years experience as a supervisor or team leader, which may include oversight of paid staff, volunteers, or alternative workforces.
  • Experience working in an historic site or sensitive natural resource area.
  • Experience working with the public.
  • Experience in natural and/or cultural resource management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management and conservation principles.
  • Knowledge of professional trail construction and maintenance techniques, materials, equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of facility, equipment and grounds maintenance repair programs and repair techniques.
  • Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting construction plans and specifications, aerial photographs and topographic maps.
  • Skill in creating maps and project plans.
  • Skill in using hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, tractors, vehicles, generators and other mechanical equipment.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment.
  • Skill in basic report writing and developing and maintaining records.
  • Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts.
  • Skill in making independent, sound and timely decisions.
  • Skill in planning, assigning, training and/or overseeing the work of others.
  • Ability to uniformly and consistently interpret and assist in enforcing park rules and regulations in a fair and consistent manner.

  • Ability to perform manual labor including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs;
  • Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.                

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Required to work in a public park/historic site with overnight camping and day use.
  • Required to work 40 hours per week, includes various schedules with hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and days off other than Saturdays, Sundays and holidays.
  • Required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Required to adjust to changing schedules.
  • Required to respond to emergencies and on-call situations.
  • Required to perform manual labor including, lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs;
  • May be required to operate a State vehicle.
  • Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays.
  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
