Stewards, in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.
Build your hands-on preservation trades skills at George Washington Monument through projects addressing a range of historic preservation needs. Over the course of a 26-week immersive experience, TTAP participants train and work alongside experienced NPS employees to preserve cultural resources and crucial infrastructure. This position is a great way to gain practical, hands-on experience and the foundation for a career in historic preservation. The projects at George Washington Monument will focus on the rehabilitation and repair of historic structures including window restoration, painting, plaster repairs, and carpentry. The ideal candidate is excited about hands-on trades work and should be able to demonstrate or discuss their interest in the historic preservation field. TTAP Placements must be able to commit to a 26-week term.
Description of Duties:
- Woodworking and carpentry on historic structures
- Finishing and painting interior and exterior buildings
- Cedar shingle installation
- historic window restoration and installation
- Fence and gate repair
- Demolition of on-site buildings
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 17 years of age
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
- Physical effort is heavy to moderate for this position and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50lbs, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury
- Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions
- Interest in using hand and power tools in an outdoor setting to complete projects
- Ability to commute to meet up location daily
- Willing and able to work with Lead Based Paint, under the supervision of Lead Safe Renovator Supervisor. Work may require candidate to wear a half-face respirator
- Follow all safety rules and regulations and participate in ongoing safety culture of the site
Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve Tuesday to Saturday, 40 hours a week, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term
Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities
- Site will provide daily supervision and mentoring to the member
- Briefing meetings will be conducted each morning prior to beginning work
- Training will be available in-person, instructor led, and online
- The park will provide the participant in-person, hands-on training alongside experienced NPS employees
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $3,697.50
- Living Allowance of $720 per week (equivalent to $18/hr)
