Overview: The Trail Crew Member will work under the guidance of the Trail Crew Leader. The trail crew will consist of 4 people working on the maintenance, restoration, and construction of trails on the North Fork Ranger District of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest based out of Pierce, ID. This is a physically demanding job that requires care and precision to successfully repair and maintain trails to support ongoing use by the public.
Term: June 3 - September 30, 2026
Location: Pierce ID, North Fork Ranger District, Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest
Responsibilities:
- Execute trail maintenance tasks including log out, brushing, tread repair, drainage improvement, signage installation, and erosion control.
- Work eight-day hitches in the backcountry, camping out and managing crew dynamics.
- Operate and maintain hand tools and power equipment safely and effectively (ie. chainsaws, brush cutters, rock bars, grip hoists)
- Complete trail work in timely and effective manner
- Foster a safe and positive work environment and keep communication open
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- A valid USFS chainsaw certification is highly desired
- Must be a minimum of 18 years old by start date
- Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day in uneven terrain, often carrying a 60 lb backpack and tools
- Endurance to conduct field work in remote settings under strenuous conditions
- Willingness to work long hours in all weather conditions
- Valid Driver’s license and reliable vehicle.
Gear: Personal backpacking gear is required for this position including: good sleeping bag, backpack, tent, rain gear, 8” leather boots, etc. Water filter, PPE, and other group gear may be provided by GBCA.
Compensation:
Pay Rate: $18/hour
Benefits: $35 per diem when in the field, mileage reimbursement at federal rate, $200 gear reimbursement upon successful completion of the season.

Housing: Accommodations available at the Pierce Work Center for a daily rate. Needs will be discussed during interviews.
