Overview: 

Herbicide: Lead a unique team of 3 dynamic individuals, partnering with the United States Forest Service (USFS).  Teams on herbicide crew will travel and camp in remote locations, treating invasive species, while working in a team environment.  Must be willing to learn the ins and outs of invasive plant management, herbicides, federal land management, and environmental service. 

Essentials Position Functions:

  • Mentor and lead a crew of 3 individuals, 17-28 years old, in day-to-day service activities on the project site and at camp.
  • Crew Leader: Provide guidance, leadership opportunities, and responsibilities to the Assistant Crew Leader to facilitate their personal growth and development.
  • Oversee camp operations including camp set-up, camp hygiene, Leave No Trace principles, and all other camp elements involved with safety and risk management.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience conducting field work and comfortable with long days in exposed environmental conditions.
  • Teaching, facilitation, and team-building experience with diverse groups of people. 
  • Strong conflict resolution skills. 
  • ArcGIS certification or experience, including use of Field Maps, ArcGIS Online, Arc Collector, and/or Survey123.
  • Experience performing vegetation surveys or monitoring or in riparian plant identification.  
  • Sense of humor, spirit of adventure, and desire to make a positive difference and promote leadership in others. 

Requirements:

  • Be a United states citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • Be available full time between the dates specified on the Member Service Agreement
  • Be between the ages of 17-28
  • Able to pass a pre-service National Criminal History check (State, Sex Offender, and Federal)
  • Current driver’s license with an insurable good driving record
  • Willingness to serve long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 16 days at a time
  • Ability to commit to the entirety of your AmeriCorps term of service with WCCC
  • Ability to serve on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Strong time-management skills and ability to serve independently as well as with others. 
  • Ability to manage all aspects of crew life and production effectively and efficiently within a 40-hour service week. 
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to serve in a fluid, changing service environment.
  • Willingness to learn and be a part of a dynamic community of peer leaders. 
  • Willingness to commit fully to the program through its duration and completing its mission.
  • Physically capable of standing and hiking (6-10 miles/day on rough, uneven terrain), bending, crouching, and stooping for long periods of time, and lifting/carrying items that weigh up to 50 pounds, in upwards of 90+ degree (F) heat.
  • Experience safely operating 4WD trucks on paved and unpaved roads, often in remote areas on unimproved roads. A willingness to constantly teach and demonstrate the best driving practices.
  • Botanical identification training/experience.
  • Must be between the ages of 18-28, have a clean driving record (insurable by WCCC), a current driver’s license, and have had a valid driver’s license for at least 3 years.
