CITY OF BLOOMINGTON PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT JOB OPPORTUNITY

Temporary Full Time – NATURAL RESOURCES VEGETATION MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST

OPERATIONS DIVISION – Class F

DUTIES:

Performs vegetation management and other ecological restoration activities. Monitors and manages invasive and undesirable vegetation within Parks natural areas and urban greenspaces using a variety of techniques. Installs and manages native plant restoration areas. Supports volunteer vegetation management efforts.

  • Operates vehicles and small equipment, uses hand tools, and applies herbicide 
  • Maintains accurate daily records of herbicide applications and management activities
  • Utilizes ESRI Field Maps app and City asset management software to track daily work data 
  • Follows and initiates correct procedures during emergency situations
  • Other duties as assigned (e.g. assist other staff or areas within Operations Division as needed)

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of invasive plants to Indiana and the Midwest and prior experience with vegetation management techniques. 
  • Knowledge of forest, grassland, and riparian ecosystems
  • Working knowledge and skill in the safe operation of light trucks, compact utility vehicles, brush cutters, push mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, power tools, hand tools, and other related grounds keeping equipment. 
  • Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding field work
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and team mentality, and must have the ability to communicate and work well with coworkers and the public
  • Experience with ESRI Field Maps or other equivalent GIS field collection platforms
  • Possess or obtain OISC Certified Pesticide Applicator/Registered Technician License within 30 days of hire
  • Possess or obtain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications within 30 days of hire.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and maintain a good driving record.

RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsible for the implementation of vegetation management and ecological restoration activities on Parks properties, tracking and reporting of daily work activities, and supporting volunteer vegetation management efforts.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Must be in excellent physical condition.  Ability to lift and carry a 30 pound backpack sprayer for extended periods over rough terrain. Frequent bending, stooping, lifting, cutting, shoveling, etc. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment, tools, soil, vegetation debris, etc. Must be physically capable of lifting 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee performs duties out of doors, in varying weather conditions. Occasional requirements to work in extreme weather conditions, such as high heat, cold temperatures, and humidity. Work sites may pose a risk of exposure to ticks, mosquitoes, poison ivy, and stinging insects. Safety precautions, including use of Personal Protective Equipment, must be used to avoid injury and incident. Some computer and software work is required. 

HOURS:

8 hours per day, 7:30am-3:30pm. However, hours and job duties vary with the season. Typically work week is Monday-Friday, though some evenings and Saturdays are required. 40 hour work week, except holidays and during periods of inclement weather. Term of employment not to exceed nine months.

SALARY:

$19.33-24.21/hr. Hourly wage based on knowledge, skills, and applicable experience. Wage reviews at scheduled intervals.
