Nestled along the St. Mary's River in mixed wetland and forest habitats, White Oak is a working conservation facility focused on maintaining large, natural habitats, species recovery, education, and ecosystem restoration. White Oak has an impressive track record of rehabilitation and recovery programs, including work with Florida grasshopper sparrows, Florida panthers, and Mississippi sandhill cranes. White Oak is a proud member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).  

Interns provide 40 hours of service per week and must be available for the duration of the internship. Interns receive on-site housing and a monthly stipend.

Interns are provided with extensive field and lab experiences designed to give a variety of technical skills and knowledge in wildlife medicine. We are proud to have a high graduation rate of interns moving into full-time CVT roles with conservation organizations through this internship program. 

• Applied field technician and laboratory technician skills  
• Running labs, learning reference ranges, and working outside 
• Assisting in surgical and preventative procedures 
• Immobilizations, exams, anesthetic monitoring, surgical assistance and all set-up and tear-down 
• Diagnostic work 
• In-house blood work, PCR, outside lab submission preparation, fecal examinations, radiology, cytology, urinalysis, and post-mortem exams 
• Hospital maintenance 
• Equipment servicing and maintenance, stocking, and inventory, and general cleaning 
• Records keeping 
• Medical records, filing, data entry and organizing 
• Specialty Tasks 
• Neonatal care, after-hours care needs as needed 

Eligibility Requirements 

Applicants must meet all requirements and submit all required materials. 

• Must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology program.  
• Preference for applicants to have obtained licensure (CVT/LVT) 
• Preference for applicants with previous experience as a technician 
• Hold a valid driver’s license and health insurance 
• Able to pass a drug test upon starting 
• Documentation of current TB test, or completion of TB-testing prior to start date 
• Legally able to work in the United States (US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or hold an Employment Authorization Document) 
• Possess a strong knowledge of veterinary principles 
• Able to work well independently and in a team environment 
• Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays  
• Experienced and comfortable working outside in high heat and humidity 
• Strong attention to detail and data management skills 
• High drive to learn, take on challenges, and stay motivated 
• Be flexible to changing environments and priorities for animal care 
• Able to lift 50 lbs. repetitively, and remain standing, walking or crouched over for long periods of time 
• Able to work 40 hours per week for the duration of the internship
