The San Diego Natural History Museum Visitor Services department is seeking enthusiastic and friendly part-time Visitor Services Associates (VSAs) to join our team in assisting guests at our admissions desk and giant-screen theater, especially during Nat at Night, our wildly popular event that runs weekly from May 15 to September 4 and offers guests a discounted, after-hours experience with weekly trivia, a rooftop DJ, and bars throughout the Museum. 
 
VSAs provide Museum guests with an unparalleled customer service experience in a fast-paced, educational, fun, and entertaining environment. The ideal candidates will be comfortable shifting roles and responsibilities throughout the day while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor. VSAs may be stationed at various positions throughout the Museum during operational hours and specific duties will range based on the event and need of the department, including, but not limited to: crowd control, moving furniture and signs, surveying guests, and processing data in the Museum’s database. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing consistent and excellent customer service interactions with all guests and potential guests, including members, volunteers, vendors, staff, and anyone else you encounter at the Museum 
  • Selling admission and program tickets and upselling memberships to guests 
  • Entering data into the database quickly and accurately 
  • Interacting with guests, including answering a variety of questions about the Museum and Balboa Park, checking in with guests to see if they need assistance, and conducting guest feedback surveys 
  • Checking in school groups according to procedures 
  • Facilitating film showings at the Museum’s giant-screen theater, including assisting guests with seating and cleaning the theater between each film 
  • Conducting other general Visitor Services duties and supporting Museum operations which includes, but is not limited to: monitoring capacity, checking tickets, moving furniture and signs, describing Museum exhibitions with interest and accuracy, monitoring the cleanliness of public spaces, answering incoming phone calls professionally, keeping up-to-date on current promotions, programs, and procedures, and assisting with data clean-up and other administrative tasks as needed and directed 

Necessary Qualifications (strong applicants have these):

  • Friendly personality with a guest-focused attitude and a commitment to creating a welcoming and fun atmosphere for the Museum's guests and for your co-workers 
  • Professional demeanor, reliable, punctual, self-motivated and hardworking, who wants to be part of a diverse team that loves where they work 
  • Ability to quickly learn and retain necessary processes, procedures, and information 
  • Ability to communicate verbally for the majority of each shift 
  • Attention to detail 

Desired Skills/Abilities (the strongest applicants also have these):

  • A background in customer service, hospitality, or retail with experience in credit card/cash handling  
  • Familiarity with Balboa Park or museums, and/or interest in natural science and the environment 
  • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database and/or Point of Sale (POS) ticketing software knowledge and experience 
  • An ability to speak other languages that will assist us in making our Museum even more accessible to members of our diverse community 

Pay: The position pays $18/hour (time and a half on pre-selected Holidays).

Time Commitment:  
This position requires availability on Fridays from 9 AM to 11:30 PM. Scheduled shifts will fall within that timeframe, but will not cover the entire period. Exact hours each week will vary depending on scheduling needs, but most staff can expect to be scheduled for one to two shifts per week if other days are also available.

This is a temporary position from May through September 4, 2026.
