The San Diego Natural History Museum Visitor Services department is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, and friendly part-time Visitor Services Lead to join our team in providing guidance and support to the Visitor Services staff and assisting guests at our admissions desk and giant-screen theater, especially during Nat at Night, our wildly popular event that runs weekly from May 15 to September 4 and offers guests a discounted, after-hours experience with weekly trivia, a rooftop DJ, and bars throughout the Museum. 
 
Visitor Services Leads provide Museum guests with an unparalleled customer service experience in a fast-paced, educational, fun, and entertaining environment. The ideal candidate will be a quick learner that is comfortable working in a loud and busy environment while continually maintaining a pleasant and professional demeanor. They will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to adapt to new situations and solve customer problems quickly and efficiently, while upholding Museum initiatives and standards. Candidates should have excellent attention to detail and be able to anticipate and evaluate Museum and guest needs. Candidates must be trustworthy, professional, and positive as this position is primarily focused on providing an excellent guest experience while leading a team of Visitor Services Associates.

VS Leads may be stationed at various positions throughout the Museum during operational hours and specific duties will range based on the event and need of the department, including, but not limited to: crowd control, moving furniture and signs, and processing data in the Museum’s database.

This position requires Friday evening availability with a strong preference for Sunday availability. The San Diego Natural History Museum is open daily.

Areas of responsibilities include:

  • Daily opening and closing procedures 
  • Reconciling daily sales
  • Maintaining accurate inventory and cash control 
  • Reporting and tracking various admissions numbers, both internally and externally 
  • Selling Museum admissions, memberships, lectures, and programs 
  • Work to collect, analyze, and complete data hygiene through multiple databases
  • Running a multi-associate floor schedule 
  • Assessing floor needs and assigning tasks as necessary 
  • Supervising and providing support to the Visitor Services Associates 
  • Training and coaching Visitor Services Associates 
  • Keeping associates up-to-date on current promotions, programs, and procedures
  • Communicating with other departments 

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of customer service experience
  • 3+ years of cash handling sales
  • 1+ years of coaching or leading other associates
  • Experience with a database driven CRM or POS required; Altru experience, a plus
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office skills
  • Strong math aptitude
  • Comfortable with public speaking and leading a small group
  • Comfortable dealing with a wide array of guests and customer service situations

Pay: The position pays $20/hour (time and a half on pre-selected Holidays).

Time Commitment:  
This position requires availability on Fridays from 2 PM to 12:30 AM. Availability from 8 AM to 7:30 PM on other days is a plus. Scheduled shifts will fall within that timeframe, but will not cover the entire period. Exact hours each week will vary depending on scheduling needs, but staff can expect to be scheduled each Friday and for at least one additional shift each week if available.

This is a temporary position from May through September 4, 2026.
