The Position
Friends of the Bay participates in Save the Sound’s Unified Water Study (UWS). We are seeking a UWS Monitoring Program Group Lead for the 2023 monitoring season.
There is some flexibility in the days that this job can be performed but not the time of day. All monitoring events must be completed within 3 hours of sunrise.
Qualifications
- Must have small boat handling experience and a minimum of a New York Safe Boating certification.
- Must possess a NY state driver’s license and have reliable vehicle transport.
- Must be detail oriented and able to follow systematic instructions and procedures with precision and accuracy.
- Must be comfortable learning new and various forms of technology ranging from water quality monitoring equipment to computer data entry and messaging programs.
Responsibilities
- Complete all preseason trainings consisting of two training sessions in mid-late April held at Save the Sound headquarters in Larchmont, NY.
- Take samples and collect data at 15 sites throughout Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor and Mill Neck Creek on various water quality parameters at sunrise twice a month from May through October.
- Check data loggers every 7 to 10 days.
- Conduct pre-calibration of water monitoring equipment prior to monitoring events and post-calibration following monitoring events.
- Troubleshoot any issues with equipment or data entry with Save the Sound’s UWS Field, Lab and Data Coordinators.
- Submit water quality data to Save the Sound in a timely fashion and in accordance with their data submission guidelines.
- Train volunteers to help at monitoring events.
- Adhere to the UWS Quality Assurance Project Plan and Standard Operating Procedure.
- Adhere to all components of the UWS equipment loan program.
- Submit 2023 season data before November 30th 2023.
