Water Resources Engineer

MAD Scientist Associates, LLC is a specialized ecological and wetland consulting firm based in Westerville, Ohio. We are looking for a full-time Water Resources Engineer (Civil/Environmental) who is passionate about fulfilling our mission: Making A Difference through sound science, exemplary community/client service, and engaging environmental education.

Are you a licensed Professional Engineer who is passionate about restoring the health and functions of our watersheds and improving our natural world? MAD Scientist Associates (MAD) is looking for a Water Resources Engineer who thrives in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. This full-time position is open to Professional Engineers at any stage in their careers. Whether you are new to ecological restoration or a seasoned professional, we want to hear from you.

As our engineer, you won’t just be crunching numbers; you will build the bridge between ecological concepts developed by our Restoration Design Team and the ground-breaking reality implemented by our construction partners. You’ll mentor engineering assistants and work side-by-side with our restoration ecologists, wetland scientists, and aquatic biologists to transform site concepts into high-quality engineering plans for wetland restoration, stream naturalization, and green infrastructure.

The Impact You Will Make

  • Design & Documentation: You will help evaluate project sites, develop detailed plan drawings and comprehensive bid sets, and provide construction oversight and documentation.
  • Modeling & Analysis: You will perform essential hydraulic/hydrological modeling and analysis to support restoration goals and permitting requirements.
  • Permitting & Compliance: You will prepare or assist with the preparation and obtainment of General Construction Permits (NOIs), Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs), floodplain permits, and Section 404 and Section 401 permits.
  • Collaborative Innovation & Environmental Stewardship: You will participate in inter-disciplinary "think tank" sessions to plan ecological projects that will deliver high-performing and complex ecological functions through well-engineered (but not OVER-engineered!) restoration plans.
  • Reliability & Team Spirit: Whether working solo or brainstorming with collaborative staff, you will work to hit deadlines and help the Restoration Team succeed.
  • Versatility: Your primary responsibility will be for the engineering-related tasks associated with our projects, but as part of a boutique firm, please note that we all "wear many hats." From time to time, you will have opportunities to support our growing practice where help is most needed.

What You Bring to the Team

We seek a motivated, detail-oriented professional who values team success and technical accuracy.

Technical Requirements:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS.
  • Expertise in grading plans, cut-and-fill calculations, and the fundamentals of wetland and stream hydrology.
  • Experience with stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  • Additional Skills in HydroCAD, HEC-RAS, SWMM, and RiverMorph are a plus!

Professional Qualities:

As our Water Resources Engineer, you will excel at (or develop):

  • Leadership: Direct the engineering plan development for all of MAD’s restoration projects with detailed technical input from our Restoration Team.
  • Communication: Provide excellent verbal and written skills and exercise a "keen eye" for the small details.
  • Self-Motivation: Exhibit a positive, "can-do" attitude with strong time-management skills.
  • Flexibility: Be willing to travel occasionally and adapt to the evolving needs of a small, fast-paced company. NOTE: Most trips for our engineer tend to be day trips and typically occur on just 1-2 days in any given week. Overnight travel is minimal, but not out of the question.

Qualifications

  • Education: BS or MS in Environmental, Ecological, Civil, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience: 3–5+ years of experience as an engineer (and 1-2 years as a P.E.).
  • Licensure: Valid driver’s license and P.E. license in Ohio.
  • Knowledge: Basic familiarity with natural channel design or wetland restoration is preferred, though we are happy to mentor the right candidate in ecological specifics.
