Looking for an opportunity to work with a collaborative team at the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC)? The Division of Natural Areas is excited to hire a Stewardship Ecologist for the West Tennessee region. The Stewardship Ecologist is the “hands-on” manager overseeing land management and ecological restoration activities at natural areas from the Mississippi River to the rolling hills of the highland rim.

This position has a variety of responsibilities, including the occasional long workdays and the ability to travel around the region, with some overnight travel. While work is predominately conducted in the field, candidates will have the ability to work remotely or in an office provided in the Jackson Environmental Field Office to conduct administrative tasks.

Candidates must be comfortable with the tools of the trade (e.g. herbicide, chainsaws, prescribed fire, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and hiking boots); possess a working knowledge of ecological concepts of Tennessee’s fauna, flora, and natural communities; and have familiarity with conservation issues in West Tennessee. Additionally, candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in Natural Resources, Forestry, Biology, Botany, Wildlife & Fisheries Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, or related field and five years of full-time professional environmental program or natural resource conservation work or work ensuring compliance with regulations. Preference may be given to those with experience in conservation biology, land management, ecological restoration, prescribed fire, native species conservation, or nature preserve/natural area management.
