Position: Wildfire Programs Assistant
Time: Up to 40 hours per week
The Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains promotes land stewardship and resource conservation through ecological research, conservation planning and design, habitat restoration and environmental education, while adhering to the highest standards of transparency and accountability as a public agency.
What is the most important component to keeping structures safe during wildfire? Most people would say “brush clearance” or “defensible space.” While that is important, the number one consideration is to harden the structure itself against ignition.
Under the supervision of the Community Resilience Project Manager, the Wildfire Program Assistant is responsible for implementing programs and projects that promote wildfire safety and natural habitat protection in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) in Los Angeles County and a portion of Ventura County.
Duties Include:
- Assists with all wildfire program grants, tasks, and deliverables
- Attends meetings and gives presentations to community organizations, homeowners associations (HOA), neighborhood councils and others to promote the RCD’s wildfire programs and services.
- Conducts outreach in diverse communities and specific geographical regions within our sphere of influence, communicating with residents, groups, communities, organizations, elected officials, agencies and others to encourage participation in Home Ignition Zone (HIZ) evaluations and other programs.
- Conduct HIZ evaluations, create reports, and provide the results to clients
- Train HIZ evaluators on best management practices for conducting home evaluations, communicating with and creating clear, comprehensive evaluation reports for clients
- Oversee service scheduling, HIZ evaluators’ schedules, reviewing reports before they are sent to clients
- Maintain accurate records, prepare progress reports and track execution of grant deliverables
- Attends National Fire Protection Association, California Fire, and similar wildfire training and program awareness opportunities as they arise
- Complete other tasks as directed by the Community Resilience Project Manager or Director of Community Resilience.
Desired Qualifications:
- A general knowledge, education and passion for natural resources and conservation
- Prior experience working in wildfire resilience-related programs
- Knowledge of conservation districts, nonprofits, and/or grant funded agencies.
- Prior experience with managing grant funded projects including budgeting and preparing reports
- Proven self-starter with the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Good communicator with public speaking skills
- Public education, teaching, and/or interpretive experience
- Experience with customer service is a plus
- Prior experience supervising staff is a plus
Work Environment:
- This is a hybrid position that will require in office and on-site work
- This position will require some nights and weekends.
- This position works with a diverse group of individuals and communities
Salary and Benefits:
- Starting wage $25-$28 per hour depending on experience
- Additional 8% health stipend added to hourly pay
- CalPERS state retirement system,
- Optional 457B
- 12 days of sick time a year
- 2 weeks’ vacation or more depending on years of service
- 14 paid holidays per year
