Attire - The Society has a very conservative grooming policy. Tattoos may not be visible or must be appropriately covered while on duty. Jewelry may be worn if it does not detract from a well-groomed look or create a safety hazard. No facial or tongue piercing.

This position will perform direct face-to-face fundraising—canvassing—through one-on-one engagement with members and guests to inspire donations. As a fundraiser/canvasser you will be in teams of two or three and fundraise outdoors in busy areas of the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. You will actively engage with members and guests, raising awareness for the Wildlife Conservancy program and recruiting sustaining donors. As a face-to-face fundraiser and advocate for the Wildlife Conservancy program, you are on the front-line, fundraising to make a change that will impact future generations. This position is ideal for those who are passionate about wildlife, are goal orientated, are a team player and enjoy meeting new people in an outdoor setting. Previous face-to-face fundraising experience is desirable. Individuals must have excellent communication skills, ability to listen, and share information about the Wildlife Conservancy program and inspire the people you meet to become a sustaining donor (Wildlife Hero). Applicants must be extremely polite with a friendly demeanor and be able to connect well with others. Previous customer service or hospitality experience is required. An example of experience would be at least 3 months or more. Cash handling and credit card transactions experience is necessary. Selected candidate must have the ability to multitask and speak and interact with guests for extended periods of time. Applicants must be available to work at both the Zoo and the Safari Park in Escondido, including weekends and all holidays. Shift hours may vary depending on operating hours of the Zoo and Safari Park and may include nights. Part-time applicants will have approximately 2-26 hours per week. This position requires the ability to work outside in varying weather conditions, with continued exposure to sun. This position is for peak periods with the opportunity of year round.

  • Educate the public of the San Diego Zoo Global mission and vision while maintaining the Zoo’s image of goodwill
  • Process cash and credit card transactions
  • Enter information into automated systems
  • Handle member problems and complaints
  • Answer telephone and reply to routine inquiries
  • Produce routine documents and logs


The On-site Fundraiser for the Wildlife Conservancy performs all job assignments with a positive attitude that supports San Diego Zoo Global’s mission and vision of saving species worldwide by uniting our expertise in animal care and conservation science with our dedication to inspiring passion for nature and leading the fight against extinction. The On-site Fundraiser for the Wildlife Conservancy encourages people to join and support the San Diego Zoo Global; promotes, sells, and processes various categories of monthly and one-time donations, adoptions and memberships. This position reports to Development Supervisor.


  • Process credit card transactions
  • Enters information into automated systems
  • Handles member and visitor problems and complaints
  • Answers and replies to routine inquiries
  • Produces routine documents and logs
  • Processes correspondence as assigned
  • Assists with special events as needed
  • Stores documents
  • Provides routine clerical assistance as assigned
  • Adheres to all SDZG and department policies and practices
  • Practices the GRRREAT Customer Service Standards


  • Staffs booth and on-site locations at the Zoo and Safari Park in order to inspire and obtain new monthly donors, one time gifts, adoptions and memberships
  • Answers questions and relays information regarding donations, adoptions, memberships and related areas
  • Answer questions and inform visitors about SDZG and the Wildlife Conservancy with a concise, accurate and inspiring message
  • Processes follow up calls and thank you postcards as needed
  • Files daily reports and updates to lead and supervisor in a timely and accurate manner
  • Comes up with new and innovative ideas for how to capture the minds and hearts of potential members

Examples of fundraiser qualifications include prior work experience in other organizations is desirable; Guest service, customer service or hospitality experience is necessary; experience greeting and meeting visitors in a diverse environment; requires people skills, friendly and approachable; be able to request for and process monthly gifts and one time donations.

Fast-paced, high volume and direct customer contact and interaction, extended outdoor exposure in all weather conditions.
