Position Overview
Join Yampatika and U.S. Forest Service in providing the public with information and resources to help them navigate, recreate and responsibly use the resources of the Medicine Bow - Routt National Forest. This seasonal position will be the first point of contact for outdoor enthusiasts, providing both the retail products and the expert knowledge they need for a safe, educational, and memorable forest experience.
Core Responsibilities
- Visitor Information & Safety:
- Research and deliver up-to-date reports on trail conditions, road closures, and seasonal hazards across the forest.
- Educate the public on Leave No Trace principles, local recreation regulations, and opportunities for recreation on forest lands.
- Explain the nuances of various Interagency Passes and process forest product permits.
- Retail Operations:
- Serve as a certified U.S. Forest Service collections officer and sell U.S. Forest Service permits and goods
- Manage the Nature Store front desk, including opening/closing, merchandising, and inventory restocking.
- Accurately process sales of U.S. Forest Service permits and maps and Yampatika maps, guides, and educational materials using a computerized Point-of-Sale (POS) system.
- Administrative Support:
- Answer high-volume phone lines and manage general email inquiries.
- Input visitor statistics and maintain organized records for both the Forest Service and Yampatika.
- Basic website editing for the U.S. Forest Service.
- Complete administrative tasks for Yampatika and U.S. Forest Service staff as available.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Software Proficiency: Ability to learn and operate retail POS software and basic Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) for daily reporting and communication.
- Availability: Must be able to work a minimum every Monday and Friday. Additional flexible hours are available between May and December. There is the potential to make this a part-time position for a shorter season.
- Communication: Exceptional verbal skills to translate complex forest data into easy-to-understand advice for visitors.
- Local Knowledge: A strong interest in or existing knowledge of the Medicine Bow - Routt National Forest landscape, resources, and trails is highly preferred.
- Retail Sales Experience: Experience leading retail sales transactions, processing credit card transactions, handling cash, managing inventory and basic accounting are preferred.
- Physical Requirements: The work requires standing, walking, stooping, reaching, occasional lifting and carrying of small packages, etc.
