The Lead Camp Counselor works with a team of staff to lead programming primarily for children 5-12 years old in an outdoor setting. Schoolhouse staff are expected to model kindness, curiosity, confidence, and empathy in their interactions with children, teens, parents, teachers, coworkers, and other stakeholders.
As a Year-Round Lead Counselor, you’ll use your time and experience to:
- Be a Leader. As a part of a team, lead a group of children in games, hikes, skill-based activities, river and creek explorations, storytelling, songs, building forts, whittling, and crafts;
- Safeguard the physical and emotional safety of the participants in their group;
- Participate in trainings, meetings, professional development, fundraising, marketing, and events as requested;
- Mentor and coach staff, including seasonal Counselors and Junior Counselors;
- Develop camp schedules and activities, maintain and prepare supplies, and create reports. All with support from the Program Staff;
- Professional Development. Work with your supervisor to create a professional development plan. This includes continuing education and familiarity with best practices.
- Elsewhere as needed. This list highlights major parts of a Camp Lead’s responsibilities, but there are plenty of other parts to the job!

- Superior verbal, interpersonal, and listening communication skills;
- Flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to a new environment
- Strong written communication skills, proficiency in computer use including MS Word and Excel, along with an interest to learn new programs and softwares
- Are up-to-date on Measles vaccinations or able to provide documentation for an exemption.
We require current pediatric and adult CPR and First Aid certification by the first day of work. We accept certifications from the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI).
Location, Travel, & Hours
The work of the Year-Round Lead Camp Counselor is currently performed both remotely and at our Durham, Orange, and Wake Locations. Travel to off-site locations is occasionally required.
