Job Summary

The mission of the Radix Center is to promote ecological literacy and environmental stewardship through educational programs, based around the demonstration of sustainable technologies.

The Youth Program Coordinator serves as an environmental educator and oversees Radix’s youth employment program. Our youth employment participants–also known as the Ecojustice Associates–are high school students who reside in the city of Albany and are 90% people of color. Radix approaches STEM career readiness through long-term after-school educational employment. Through our program, high school students develop the knowledge, techniques, and advocacy tools needed to excel in STEM higher education while developing their resumes and earning money.

This position is primarily in-person, 20-25 hrs per week, with the ability to complete a limited amount of administrative work remotely. There is the possibility of increased hours as program funding allows.

Duties

70% - Manage the Youth Employment Program

  • Schedule youth employees and co-educators, M-Th, 3:15-7:15 pm during the school year, 8:00 am-12:45 pm during the summer
  • Assign and oversee tasks, providing supervision, instruction, and evaluation
  • Coordinate with Farm Manager to determine daily farming tasks and workload for youth employees
  • Recruit new youth and onboard for the program
  • Interview prospective candidates
  • Give youth contracts with expectations
  • Undergo an orientation, including collection of working papers, I-9; W-4; NYS tax form and/or birth certificate; file appropriately
  • Youth in program should be trained for job readiness – no cell phones, actively ask for a new task after completing assigned task, arrive on time, do not leave the premises without permission during the shift, participate in activities and discussions
  • Record youth attendance and activities
  • Make recommendations to Supervisors as to program equipment and supply needs
  • Coordinate with City of Albany’s Summer Youth Program to register Radix as a SYEP site
  • Maintain program data and prepare outcome reports
  • Assist in the care, cleanliness, and security of the facility
  • Foster a nurturing, positive, and professional environment

30% - Other duties as assigned which include:

  • Teach enrichment workshops throughout the year at local schools or for community groups
  • Develop elementary grade level enrichment curriculum
  • Assist with compost, farm share, and community programs, requiring occasional weekend work
  • Upload photographs/videos to the shared media folder on the google drive (2-3 uploads/month requested)
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Answer communication, internal and external, within 24 hrs
  • Log detailed activities and classify to appropriate billing categories

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of related experience is required. A valid drivers license is required.

Ideal candidates demonstrate some or all of the following:

  • Proven supervising experience in farming or agricultural settings with a strong emphasis on team leadership.
  • A strong commitment to issues of environmental justice, food justice, and racial equity, and experience working with diverse communities
  • Experience operating youth-led programming in a nonprofit or school setting
  • Experience working in agriculture, education, environmental science, and/or nonprofit program management and assessment
  • Experience leading interns, employees, and volunteers from diverse backgrounds
  • The ability to work independently or collaboratively with a small group depending on the demands of a project
  • Weekend and evening availability
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting safely; comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
