Position Summary: The CCRCD Archaeologist is responsible for facilitating completion ofSection 106 review on all CCRCD projects that require cultural review including surveys, reports, examine and interpret resources, evaluate and identify sites, prepare maps, inventories, reports and records related to all aspects of the heritage and cultural resources for projects. The Archaeologist ensures compliance with changes in local, state and federal requirementsregarding cultural resources. Other significant responsibilities include project development and partnerships to support further work by the CCRCD in the region. All activities should be performed in a timely and accurate manner, with a high level of quality and customer service.
Summary of Job Responsibilities:
- Be able to define areas of major cultural resource/environmental concerns, and designs andimplements methodologies to address such concerns.
- Provides guidance on cultural resource issues to field office personnel in the assigned area ofresponsibility.
- Assists with the development of organization’s cultural resource policy and procedures asrequested.
- Plans and executes surveys for the location and verification of archaeological and historicalsites. Evaluates sites and identifies which are appropriate for inclusion to the NationalRegister of Historic Places.
- Administers Section 106 Review of projects where archaeological materials may be subject to destruction or damage for protection and mitigation of cultural sites.
- Completes the preparation of maps, inventories, reports, and records related to all aspects ofthe heritage and cultural resource program or CEQA/NEPA documentation.
- Provides consultation and advice to unit personnel for problems in which cultural resourcesare involved.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:
Education-
1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:
- History of archaeology.
- Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
- Regional archaeology, archaeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion ofa major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regionalspecialization for professional development.
- Theory and methods of archaeology. Methods include, but are not limited to,typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analyticaltechniques.
- Archaeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical andpractical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques,and report preparation by participation in actual field work. and
Six semester hours of related course work in:
- geography, geology, or cultural geography;
- history, historiography, or historical archeology;
- environmental studies;
- scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
- surveying; and
- Archaeological field school.
2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physicalanthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline maybe accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculumsupplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1.

B. Experience
Four years of archaeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of thefundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience musthave included archaeology field experience, which may include that gained in anarchaeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination ofprofessional experience in archaeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, andpreparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additionalexperience under the direction of a higher-grade archaeologist, be able to demonstrate theability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a largerarchaeological project.

C. Combination of Education and Experience
College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in Aabove, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
Pay:
$35-45/ hour depending on education and experience15-30 hours a week depending on availability and project needs.
