This Assistant Engineer II - Civil assists and performs a variety of professional civil engineering duties, including open channel hydraulic modeling, in the preparation of civil engineering studies, reports, design, and construction plans and specifications for the planning, design, and construction of natural resources restoration projects.  Project work may include lake-stream separation, fishery habitat restoration, fish migration barriers removal, wetland restoration, riparian habitat improvements, and aquatic habitat improvements.
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collect data, conduct field survey to obtain data, review data, perform hydraulic modeling of open channel flow and overland flow, and prepare or participate in preparation of studies and reports for watershed natural resources restoration projects during planning, design, and construction phases.  These reports include, but are not limited to: problem definition, conceptual alternatives evaluation, feasible alternatives evaluation, planning study report, engineer's report, environmental planning reports, basis of design, design calculations, calculation of quantities, estimated costs, and open channel hydraulic modeling.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering specifications, drawings, sketches, and other supporting documentation for proposed watershed natural resources restoration projects; review drawings, plans and other work submitted by external consultants, engineers, and contractors for conformance with engineering codes, standards and District specifications; draft and prepare technical and administrative correspondence and reports.
  • Participate in various engineering studies and related watershed capital improvement projects with District staff, outside agencies and consultants, ensuring that deadlines, standards and specifications are met appropriately.  Participate in and assist in coordination with regulatory and/or environmental permit activities and processes within the District and with outside agencies.
  • Provide support to construction of watershed capital improvement projects; assist in administration of construction contract; provide and coordinate technical support during project construction including design changes, submittal review, request for information from contractors, interpretation of contract documents and assistance with change orders.

Two (2) years of professional engineering experience.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or a field related to assigned functional area(s).


Possession of a valid California Engineer-in-Training (EIT) Certificate with two (2) years of associated paraprofessional engineering experience.

License or Certificate:
Some Assistant Engineer II - Civil positions may require registration with the State of California as a Professional Engineer (PE).  This position does not require registration.
