The mission of Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources (FHNR) is to protect, restore, expand and manage New York City’s natural spaces and green infrastructure to maximize their benefits and promote their value within and outside of the urban ecosystem
- Under the direction of senior staff in the Forestry, Horticulture and Natural Resources (FHNR), provide technical expertise in the fields of hydrology, fluvial geomorphology and storm water management for natural resource assessment, protection, restoration design and management across NYC parkland.
- Help assure that the agency is in compliance with wetlands, storm water management and other environmental regulations and restoration performance standards.
- Assess and monitor hydrologic and physical conditions and processes of coastal shorelines, tidal and freshwater wetlands and streams, including sedimentation and erosion, stream flow and storm water runoff.
- Compile, analyze and interpret data and present results using field and desktop assessments, using Hydrologic Engineering Centers River Analysis System, ArcInfo or other tools to model, map, visualize and analyze data.
- Review and analyze engineering plans and designs of capital construction projects to assess impacts to parkland and water resources; provide recommendations and guidelines and coordinate with other city, state and federal agencies to ensure these are implemented.
- Assist in analysis to support development of restoration designs for shorelines, wetlands, streams and other aquatic systems.
- Prepare maps, figures and final reports to submit to the public, funders, collaborators, internal staff and regulatory agencies.
- Support senior staff in evaluating the effects of restoration and adaptive management actions on natural resources.
- A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have a master’s degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two year of experience described in “2” above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in “1” and “2” above.
Residency in New York City, Nassau, Orange, Rockland, Suffolk, Putnam or Westchester counties required for employees with over two years of city service. New York City residency required for all other candidates.
- Advanced degree in an environmental science, ecology, natural resource management or a related field.
- Excellent writing, organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to work in a team.
- Field experience conducting hydrologic or fluvial geomorphic monitoring.
- Knowledge of erosion control and storm water pollution prevention techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in field mapping, surveying and using related equipment (e.g. GPS, RTK or total stations).
- Experience with stream and wetland restoration design.
- Strong GIS, spatial and statistical analysis and data management skills.
- Experience reviewing and evaluating construction plans and specifications for the purpose of developing monitoring reports.
- In-depth understanding of wetlands and storm water regulations.
- Valid New York State driver license.
Salary: $72,000 - $84,000 plus excellent benefits
