Position Title: Policy Associate

Schedule: Non-exempt, Full-Time

Compensation: $32.00 – $35.00/hour 

Benefits: Health insurance 100%, two weeks PTO, all federal holidays, one week sick, retirement Simple IRA (3% employer match), and two hours fitness benefit per week

Work Location: Point Reyes Station, CA; partial remote eligibility at least one day per week

Reports to: Executive Director

Start Date: Approximately November 5, 2024

The Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC) is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit located in Point Reyes Station, California, the gateway town to the only national seashore on the West Coast. Our mission is to protect and sustain the unique lands, waters, and biodiversity of West Marin. We achieve this goal through advocacy, science, education, and engagement. Summary 

The Policy Associate performs research, analysis, advocacy, communications, and program management, focusing on environmental and natural resources, including public lands, coastal resource protection, climate adaptation, and marine protected areas, which is vital in furthering EAC’s mission.

Key Goals of This Position:

  • Research and analyze key environmental issues impacting coastal Marin County to inform EAC’s policy initiatives
  • Communicate these effectively across audiences
  • Help formulate positions and strategic direction
  • Advocate and represent EAC’s solutions-oriented approach 

Responsibilities

Research and Analysis: 

  • Gather and analyze data on environmental issues relevant to EAC’s mission, including land use and policy issues. Data analysis includes communities disproportionately impacted by environmental issues, such as hazards and policy impacts. Advise Executive Director and Board Committees on issues/findings. Draft comment letters to government agencies.

Advocacy and Public Speaking:

  • Represent EAC publicly within assigned program arenas, including but not limited to: Marin County, National Park Service, Coastal Commission, Ocean Protection Council, and Fish and Game Commission.
  • Work with volunteers and other environmental groups that take an active interest in environmental quality in West Marin and California, campaigning, building partnerships, and participating in and potentially leading coalitions. 
  • Promote EAC’s environmental legal and policy internship program to train a diverse and inclusive next generation of environmental advocates. This may include supervision of interns at the college or graduate level with support from the Executive Director. 

Communications and Outreach: 

  • Create content for press releases, blog posts, social media/digital, and other agency communications related to focus areas. 
  • Participate in EAC’s outreach, events, and other activities. This may include some limited weekends.  

Fundraising and Grant Writing:

  • Participate and grow EAC fundraising and relationships to support advocacy efforts.
  • Assist in preparing communications, grant proposals, and reports for funders related to policy initiatives.

Program Planning and Implementation:

  • Work with the Executive Director on determining priority programs to adopt and the ongoing strategic direction of programs.
  • Assist with the implementation and management of assigned programs, including planning and program budgets.

Administrative Support:

  • Maintain databases or records to track relevant metrics and materials to support ongoing research and policy efforts.

Additional duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience such as grassroots organizing at a management/senior level.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in environmental policy and/or advocacy work.
  • Ability to understand and assimilate complex environmental issues and policies effectively and convey them simply across audiences and platforms.
  • Strong research, writing, proofreading, and analytical skills; attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal and public speaking abilities. 
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in communicating and working with diverse groups of people.
  • Strategic thinker with solid project management and program planning skills.
  • Able to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
  • Commitment to equity, environmental justice, EAC’s mission, and climate resilience.
  • Familiarity working in an office setting and experience using Google Drive and Microsoft Office Suite.  
  • Access to reliable transportation. 
  • Willingness for limited travel 5% (mostly local and within California).
  • Ability to complete tasks with or without reasonable accommodations.
